Intergenerational Penpals

Recently, our group has reached out to the wider community and formed new connections across the generations.  Part of this has involved a joyful exchange. We shared our blog post on our much-loved toys and games with a class of Year 5 pupils at Chorlton Primary School and then, after reading our memories, the children wrote back to thank us and tell us about their favourite toys and activities.  Read on to see what they shared.

Norah

I really enjoy my tablet, paddling pool, football and reading.  I like my tablet because there are a lot of fun games to join.  I like my paddling pool because it is refreshing and I get to swim.  I also like football because I can play with my brother.  And last but not least, I like reading because it is entertaining. I can learn stuff and it also makes time go faster.

Roaa

I really enjoy drawing, singing, playing football and playing on my phone.  Playing football is fun but some boys think girls can’t play and I am a girl.  I like playing on my phone but it can get boring but I just don’t know what to do if I leave my phone.  I love singing but my sister and my brother say to stop.  That’s all. I really enjoy playing video games and because of lockdown I ended up plyaing on the computer more than I would have.  I especially like playing computer games with my friends and my brother because it gives you time to spend with them and sometimes it is fun to annoy them. I also like playing football and on the trampoline because it gives you time to be off a screen and it’s nice to get fresh air.  Have you ever played on any of these?

When I was younger, I had a rabbit teddy called Genou.  I used to take him everywhere.  I have had him since I was 1 years old.  Because I am a bit older, I don’t play with him but I still have him.  Nowadays, I play with my PC and sometimes I play Playstation 4.  I do play outside games more than others.  I play things like Manhunt and Tig and also Hide and Seek.

Caelan

I really enjoy bouncing on my trampoline.  When I feel sad I hug my teddy called Sky.  I think he is a Bengal Tiger or something, but I like to think of him as a cat.  My main go to when I am bored is my tablet.  I have A LOT of games on it.

I really enjoy playing sport like football, cricket, dodge balls and tennis.  I also like playing board games but I am a terrible loser.  I also love playing with bouncy balls as I love physical play.  I wonder if you have ever played any of these games?

Noah

I really enjoy the trampoline and doing flips, back flips and front flips.  It relaxes me and when I do it, I listen to music.  I also like gaming.  I get to play with my friends.

Mostafa

I really enjoy playing video games like Roblox and Fifa 20 and more video games.  I play football and I really enjoy it.  I support Manchester United.  I also play card games like Uno and more.   I love playing card games with my family.  It makes me very good.

Abdulrahman

I really enjoy playing football. It is my hobby and I really want to be like Yusuf in Denmark’s team.  He is really good.  He scores on that team and bends in like Beckham did.  When I play Roblox, I forget about everything.  It feels like I am inside of it.  Have you heard of it before?  It is a very fun game.  I mainly play with my friend Mostafa.  He is funny and we like the same things.  After another year, I will go to high school so I will continue with my learning.

I really enjoy board games because I have one younger sister and one younger brother.  I enjoy winning and making them mad.  I enjoy drawing in my spare time because it makes me feel less mad and stressed.  I like going on TikTok because I dance on there.  I like basketball, football and tennis because it is fun and keeps me active.  I like having me time.  Do you still enjoy these things?

I would like to tell you about my fantastic rope swing that is super fun.  When I first found out it was there, I rushed downstairs.  I was literally super excited.  I started just doing the basic moves but when I practiced I became amazing at it.  I could even do it one handed!

I really enjoy playing Monopoly because I am very competitive.  Do you also enjoy Monopoly?

I really enjoy reading.  It carries me away on a magical journey.  I also like to build Lego and play Monopoly.  I like to live in the Harry Potter world by using dolls.  I like trampolining and swinging.  I LOVE to draw and paint.

Jad

I do modern things, mainly electronics like Play Station 5, PCs and revolving around that section.  I enjoy them as it makes me entertained.  It is enjoyable and makes me feel free from the real world.  To add to that, I play online games like Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft and more.  Online games turn me into a virtual person.  I hope you enjoyed sharing ideas!

I really enjoy playing with my family and I am always very competitive to win.  I also enjoy playing with my dolls and horse in my room too!  Sometimes, when I am alone, I like to draw in my sketchbook or play with my Lego.

WJA

I enjoyed drawing when I was young.  I also enjoyed Monopoly with my brother and cousins and enjoyed  Risk with my family.  I also played Lego when I was 4 and 5.  I play chess with my brother but I don’t think I have ever won.  I spend hours on my iPad and PC, especially on weekends.  I also like to play Piano sometimes.

I really enjoy playing on my computer and on my games console but I also enjoy making clays models, drawing and playing with Lego.  When I play games with my friends it is fun but when I play with my 4 sisters it is different because they are all older and competitive.  Because I am such a sore loser, it is painful.

I really enjoy playing on my iPad which has online games you can play.  When I was younger, I used to play with two of my older sisters.  I have 5 older sisters.  When I was in my younger years two of my sisters were too busy with school.  I only got my iPad this year.  Before I got it, I played with my dolls and teddies.  My favourite stuffed animal is my bunny.  I got it when I was one.  It was the one I drew on.  I like to play by myself as I am used to that.  When I was five and six, me and my sisters used our imagination and played outside.  We used ideas from the tv and books and the scooters we had.  I n my free time, I write in my diary and try on jewellery.  When I am sad, I do what makes me happy.  Even thought I won’t play with these toys when I am older, I want to keep the memories.  Playing with toys makes me calm and my teddies make me feel like I am not alone. 

Kareem

I really enjoyed playing with Hungry Hippos, Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, Lego and sketching.  I would draw anything except real people’s portraits.  I would always be last or second in Ludo and Snakes and Ladders.  Now I play on electronics like my computer, Play Station.  I do still play football and do sketching.
